Actor Johnny Depp was in London at the end of 2010 shooting final scenes of the newest sequel to the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, On Stranger Tides, which was released in Europe this month. His presence caught the attention of an 11 year old British school girl who decided to write a personal letter to Mr. Depp at the studio to ask for his support in aid of a "mutiny in her classroom!"
A few days later, she, and her entire school, got a huge surprise when Mr. Depp, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, arrived in her classroom at the school with several "shipmates" and surprised them all with a well-played-out message to the kids that "mutiny" in school was not really such a good idea. Actor Johnny Depp has admitted that the role of Captain Jack Sparrow has entered his own personal life and he sometimes finds himself says things that Capatain Jack would say on screen to his wife or friends. He claims it is just part of him now and he rather likes it.
Most of you have seen pirates in other movies or TV shows, and you may have read the classic book Treasure Island written in 1883 by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson - a tale of buccaneers and buried gold treasure. But did you know that the word "pirate" comes from the Latin word "pirata" which, in turn, comes from the Greek word "peira" and means to experience or attempt something, but can also mean peril or danger.
The classic age of piracy in the Caribbean started around 1560 and lasted until the 1720s. Many pirates came to the Caribbean after the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. Seamen stayed in the Caribbean and became pirates shortly after that. Caribbean piracy began because of fighting among the rival European powers of the time, including England, Spain, Dutch United Provinces, Portuguese Empire and France. Most of these pirates were of English, Dutch and French origin. Because Spain controlled most of the Caribbean, many of the attacked cities and ships belonged to the Spanish Empire and were located along the East coast of America and the West coast of Africa. Some of the best-known pirate bases were New Providence, in the Bahamas from 1715 to 1725, Tortuga established in the 1640s and Port Royal after 1655. Among the most famous Caribbean pirates are Edward Teach or "Blackbeard" and Henry Morgan.
Pirates on the high seas are still a very big problem today, specially off the East coast of Africa where even super tankers are hijacked by heavily armed men in speed boats. The crews and the cargo are taken for ransom and it costs shipping companies and governments millions of dollars every month to protect their ships and to deal with these crimes.
