General Stanley McChrystal, former commander of U.S forces in Afghanistan, says the greatest threat to America today is obesity and lack of education. Atlantic Magazine journalist, Nicholas Burns, reporting from the Aspen, Colorado Ideas Festival, June 30, 2012 asked several of the speakers what they believe is the biggest threat to the USA right now. While many conservatives answered that it is Iran and its nuclear program, there was one surprise answer. General McChrystal answered that the biggest threat to the United States today isn't in Iran or Pakistan -- these, we can ultimately deal with: "We have the technology and forces to do that." The greatest threat is "in our schools," he said, and added, "33% of the nation is ineligible to serve in the military," he said. " It's a national security issue."
Obesity in the US costs $170 billion a year- 21 % of all medical costs. Obesity kills over 100,000 people in the US every year - that's 3 times the number of people killed by guns. Two-thirds of the US population is now overweight , the US Center for Disease Control says at least 30% of Americans are medically obese.. 30% of all high school seniors fail to graduate each year. That's 1.4 million drop-outs a year. If you are wondering if you are obese, a recent BBC article allows you to write in your weight and age and find out just where you rank. If you have any doubts about the "dumbing of America" in recent years, it will enlighten you to read a recent article by economist Paul Krugman in the New York Times called Who's Very Important and to read some of the readers comments to that article which are specially revealing. One in particular is worth showing here. It is from a woman in a poor town in Oklahoma:
I live in a poor town in a poor state. Both are solidly Republican. Here is why they vote the way they do. The only thing they understand is that they don't like abortion and they do like a huge military. The reason they support a huge military is because that is the only option for many of their children. They don't understand that the rich pay no taxes. They don't understand that corporations are not looking out for their best interests. All they understand is abortion and military. Oh, and they are racist so they don't like the president. (I'm not making that up. All I hear around here are racist jokes about Obama and ranting over his needing "to accept Jesus Christ."
Voters of every level cannot have missed the headlines of the last 4 years, yet they continue to swallow the false story pandered by some news networks that the entire financial crisis was the fault of the present government forcing banks to loan money to poor people. Racism and ignorance may result in a retun to a fuedal state with an untouchable aristocratic ruler and a Congress which pays no attention to disposable workers. Their ignorance will simply return them to the status of a peasant class - a state that their forefathers fought so hard to break free from. US voters will sit in front of their TVs, stuff themselves, and watch while conservative corporate sponsors posing as news reporters massage their brains about evil Iranians, godless abortionists, socialist Europeans, the climate change conspirators, and job-stealing foreigners with the same orchestrated campaign that got the US bogged down in Iraq, drained the Federal budget and sent the world into an endless, unwinnable war on terror. The viewers will nod their heads like good peasants and take another bite not knowing that the real threat is right in front of them and that the real war on terror is their own ignorance and "The Battle of the Bulge".
