Seahorses are fascinating and beautiful sea creatures. They look like tiny dragons, but they have no scales. They have a horse-like head (which is where they get their name), they have no arms and legs, but they do have a long tail that curls forward and a pouch where the guy holds eggs!
Seahorses are monogamous – which means they choose a mate for life. But the really weird thing about Seahorses and mating is that it is the guys who get pregnant! The way it works is that the female deposits her eggs into a pouch on the guy’s front and he carries them until they are hatched. Now, I didn’t even know that Seahorses had a pouch - like a Kangaroo, so this was a surprise for me.
Seahorses only eat small Brine Shrimp. They have no teeth, so they just suck in the shrimps whole with powerful suction through their snout. A grown seahorse can eat up to 3,000 of these tiny shrimp every day. And one last little detail – their eyes – a seahorse eyes move independent of each other and can look in 2 places at once – I guess to keep one eye on the eggs and the other on whether the wife is putting eggs in some one else’s pouch!
